The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is divided into seven distinct regions, each of which holds an annual Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC) in the spring. Region 7 is made up of Florida, Georgia, South and North Carolina. This year the Region 7 RLDC, under the theme of “Make It Matter, Make It Happen” is being hosted by the University of Miami, Florida International University, Miami Dade College, and the South Florida Professional Chapter.
SHPE Florida International University
SHPE University of Miami
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) started at the University of Miami with the purpose to prepare STEM majors professionally and give students the opportunity to land their dream job. Our SHPE chapter has been blessed with great opportunities, supportive faculty members, and motivated students. Together we have created a dynamic and dedicated family.
As a chapter, we have been growing rapidly, both in numbers and in dedication to our newly found familia. Our members continue to live by the five pillars of SHPE and our leaders have evolved into the strong men and women that will revolutionize the world in the upcoming years. They have exposed themselves to a variety of different challenges and opportunities which have enhanced their soft skills and professional skills.
With the help of our College of Engineering faculty and staff, we have been able to help students from every discipline find research positions, internships, and jobs. Our alumni are part of fortune 500 companies all around the world. These companies include Amazon, Google, Twitter, Texas Instruments, Johnson & Johnson, Catepillar, Goldman Sachs, and many more! Through RLDC we hope to help others ignite their passion, ambition, and dedication to succeed!
SHPE Miami Dade College
Our Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers chapter at Miami Dade College, has been active since its inception in 2015. It was then that our first president Raul la Rosa was impressed by the impact SHPE had had with many of his friends in the FIU and UM Chapters by helping them organize their career, build a strong professional presence and even earn internships at Boeing, IBM and Goldman Sachs as programmers/developers at the time.
We have grown our MDC chapter ever since in order to give Hispanic MDC students pursuing a technical degree the same opportunities other students had at FIU and UM. We have built a chapter that prepares our members to become valuable in today’s job market by organizing community service projects related to STEM, creating partnerships with companies to hold workshops and career fairs at Miami Dade College and hosting social events to bring together the STEM community at Miami Dade College.
Given that the location of our campus is at the heart of Hialeah, we understood from the beginning the importance of bringing SHPE’s legacy home not only to the students but also to the local community at large. Since 2015, it has been our honor to represent the organization and to play the critical role of empowering the community of STEM students to best fulfill their potential.
Our members understand the importance of an ambition to succeed and improve, and thus every day we take on the challenge of energizing the STEM community in Miami Dade College in whichever small but impactful ways we can. We look forward to fulfilling our potential and to help others achieve theirs through the upcoming RLDC and beyond.
SHPE South Florida Professional Chapter
The SHPE South Florida Professional Chapter was officially founded in 2003. We developed a network and created opportunities/relationships with STEM professionals in the South Florida area and currently have over 50 active members! In order to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development, the chapter changes lives and empowers the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential.
We aim for a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers. The chapter continues to strengthen the professional presence in South Florida area and further enhance SHPE’s vision and mission.
